Church Leaders call public officials to exercise ethical leadership

The Midlands Christian Council, with support from PACSA, hosted a dialogue of church leaders to reflect on ethical leadership in the public space. This dialogue was prompted by the Constitutional Court ruling that President Zuma has failed to protect, defend and respect the constitution in the Nkandla matter.
70 local church leaders attended. While all agreed on the need to hold public officials to account and that many public officials are abusing their positions, they did not all agree on the manner in which the church should act? Some leader’s called for churches to take a public stand while other argued for behind the scene conversations with public officials. The same divisions are reflected amongst the broad public – some supporting the President while other calling for his resignation. This dialogue revealed that the churches reflect the divisions within the larger society and that much more discussion is needed on the prophetic role of the church.
