Mervyn Abrahams from PACSA was invited to be part of a panel discussion at the Jozzie Book Fair in September 2016. The fair, hosted by Khanya College at Wits University, featured numerous book launches, workshops, exhibitions and discussion forums.Mervyn participated in a panel discussion on “The Food Crisis: Why are so many going hungry in South Africa?” with Jacklyn Cock from Wits University and Vanessa Black from Biowatch. The discussion raised a number of issues related to the food crisis such as the low wage economy, the household affordability crisis, the commodification of food, and the power of industrial agriculture and corporates in the food system. While advocating for household food gardens and market access for small scale farmers has some positive effect at household food security level it was also raised that the hunger is the result of systemic forces that requires a re-imagination of the food system globally.
