In a written submission to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA),PACSA opposed the application by ESKOM to increase the cost of electricity by a further 12.69%,over and above the already granted 12,7% increase which comes into effect on the 1st June 2015. Should NERSA grant ESKOM’s application it will mean a 25.3% increase in the cost of electricity over the year.
In its submission PACSA argues that such an increase will have a devastating impact on South African households who face severe financial constraints and because electricity tariffs have long ago breached the affordability threshold. PACSA recommends that we can find a way to deal with Eskom’s current challenges by looking at other funding models and not by pushing the majority of households deeper into poverty, suffering and indignity and entrenching inequality. It cannot also be that we forgo our vision of a just, dignified, humane, free and democratic society through forcing poorer households to disconnect themselves from the electricity because they cannot afford it.
